The Duchess of Alba, Shaquile O’neal, Xabi Alonso and Rubens Barrichello, toodos they have something in common. They use balance bracelets. The companions of the Courier draw again the issue to the fore, after nuetra study demonstrating its limited utility.
powerbalanceEs quite possible that within a few years the phenomenon of the bracelets ‘power balance’ is studied in schools of marketing. Making reappear credulity and faith in a society that has made its official religion skepticism has merit. Especially if you get with it sales figures that would make the envy of any multinational. The bracelets are exhausted just hit the stores and the number of reserve units far exceeds that go to market. Although the importer is unwilling to provide data about its sales in Spain, a figure crossing venture that would allow about 100,000 units in the best days. A great business if you consider that each bracelet worth 35 euros.
They carry all. From the Duchess of Alba to Guti through actresses, TV presenters or pilots of the F-1 and Rubens Barrichello. No person who resists wear his bracelet on his wrist ‘power balance’. The bracelet was first into fashion last year, although its definitive consolidation as a social phenomenon occurred last Christmas, when he became the most sought out and present customers bought them in pairs. “We had never seen anything like it, they brought us lots of a hundred bracelets and two or three hours they had sold all of us”, says Tito Moro, who owns a surf shop in San Sebastian.
It was precisely in the circuit of professional surfing, where the sale took his first steps. “The first saw a year ago at a trade show in San Diego and even though we noticed as the months passed we realized that all the surfers of the circuit and the kids were starting to ask for her” says Moro. Ivan Hernandez, the importer who has been coordinating the distribution of Marbella in Spain bracelets, confirms that professional sports sliding pioneered the use of the bracelet because “substantially improved its balance.”
Balance is the watchword of the bracelet. The twenty-first century adaptation of ancient amulet trade scheme sets aside arguments about miraculous healings and replaced by concepts of ’scientific’ less committed. Its website says that the sale “is a frequency stored in a hologram that restores your body’s electromagnetic balance isolating each living cell of the external factors that prevent it from functioning at 100% of its possibilities.”
‘Trickery’
The bracelet is actually a rubber ring which incorporates two holograms as may appear on any credit card. The more successful model is made of silicone but there are other neoprene. Add the advertising that ” ‘power balance’ does not contain any source of energy by itself” and are “bio-electric energy from each of which carry the quantum hologram, tuning into the bio-field and harmonizing your inner chi ‘.
From the Society for the Advancement of Creative Thinking, the Valencian physician Esther Samper denies a speech which he calls “claptrap” and asserts that the bracelets’ can not have any effect because they are composed of inert materials that do not affect people at all ‘. Samper added that manufacturers “have been limited to modernize the old argument with holograms of electromagnetism, pure trickery from a scientific standpoint.
So rather than categorical or Samper, the discloser and scientific adviser Félix Ares attributes the success to “the powerful effect of suggestion” and recalls that a U.S. judge sentenced in 2006 to the distributor of a magnetic bracelet to repay the money 100,000 buyers paid for misleading advertising. The judge argued that the alleged properties of the bracelet, a ring of metal finished in two small areas that became very popular, “are more fiction than science.”
The strength of the arguments does not discourages their advocates. “The most eloquent proof that something does is it sells more than we can supply only through word of mouth,” says the dealer José Luis Gómez. The bracelet has exceeded supply and sporting fields and in pharmacies. The buyer profile has been extended to older persons.
Whether or not therapeutic effects, the reservations list expands every day and all the lots that they have now been sold until March. In addition, pirated copies have begun to sprout like mushrooms, but importers say the original bracelets are not the same because their holograms’ have not been activated. It seems that the twenty-first century charm still has here to stay.
Some weight loss supplements could cause serious liver damage

Weight loss dietary supplements enriched with natural isomers of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) transport could cause serious liver damage, according to the latest study by a team of Cardiovascular Research Center of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the Catalan Institute of Science Cardiovascular. The experimental study performed in mice, suggests that trans CLA-enriched foods can cause increased oxidative stress, inflammation, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, lipodystrophy (lack of adipose tissue), arteriosclerosis and an abnormal accumulation of fat in the liver.
The coordinator of the work that has just been published in Frontiers in Bioscience, José Martínez-González, said: “The results should be viewed as an important wake-up call about the possible effects of prolonged and uncontrolled consumption of slimming compounds studied, as the main form to lose weight. Although not yet proven its action in humans, trans CLA isomers cause havoc in the liver of mice.
The study, conducted in collaboration with the Aragon Institute of Health Sciences in Zaragoza, describes that the liver damage observed in rodents is associated with significant alterations in the expression of genes responsible for the regulation of glucose uptake and lipids by the liver cells.
Conjugated linoleic acid is found in vegetable oils and especially in meat and milk from ruminant animals. In recent years, properties have been ascribed to the reduction of cholesterol and fat in the body, thereby encouraging weight loss. Under this premise, it has been enhanced as enriching component of slimming products.
So far, the CLA has been associated with positive effects on human health, since some studies have shown its potential anticancer, cardioprotective properties and their potential usefulness in controlling weight. However, in recent years has been raised that not all isomers are equally beneficial. There are both cis isomers (c9, t11-CLA), the most abundant in nature, such as trans isomers (t10, c12-CLA). Recent scientific studies suggest that the trans could seriously damage health.
Rigorous labeling
The study authors recommend that indicates the type of isomer present in commercial preparations. One of the aims of the food industry goes through a scientifically compare nutrition label to ensure the reliability of consumer advertising of these foods.
The investigation also brought together researchers from the Thematic Network of Cooperative Research in Cardiovascular Diseases and Biomedical Research Center in Red-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition.
Dislocated shoulder

The dislocated shoulder. We started a new series of articles, this time, the shoulder joint and more particularly of the shoulder dislocation. It explains the various pathologies more common and the issues that concern them.
In this first study will involve the “dislocated shoulder, one of the most serious injuries and unfortunately typical of that joint.
A) GENERAL CONCEPTS ABOUT THE SHOULDER
The shoulder is formed from the combination of two main anatomical elements: the humerus and scapula bone, also known as the scapula or shoulder commonly called. Also articulate with the clavicle. We recognize three distinct parts:
1) Articulation scapula – shoulder.
2) acromioclavicular – clavicular.
3) Articulation esterno – clavicular
The humeral head articulates with the scapula area (Glen), which takes a form accommodated to the rounded surface of the bone in question. At the head of the humerus be larger than the area in which it articulates with the scapula, requires a support structure to ensure stability comprising an annulus, muscles and ligaments.
A.1) peculiarities of man
• Its unique composition gives it great mobility, allowing thus the implementation of movement in any plane.
• The area indicating considerable laxity of both the joint capsule and ligaments of the lining.
• The area of the joint capsule, ligamentous structures reinforced, an area left between “fragile”, enabling the output of the humeral head.
B) DEFINITION OF SHOULDER DISLOCATION
The injury involves the passage of the humeral head from its traditional location is the fossa within the joint capsule (dislocated scapula – humeral). When this shift is partial, that is not entirely out of the joint capsule, we speak of a subluxation.
C) HOW TO PRODUCE
Can occur by three ways:
1) Direct Mechanism
It is unusual to occur as a result of direct trauma to the back of the joint, thereby driving the humeral head against the anterior joint capsule, causing tearing and then descoaptación of the joint. This lesion often appears for reasons such as traffic accidents or in sports, in collisions of handball or rugby players, against another player or the ground.
2) indirect mechanism
It is the most common cause. The dislocation occurs, when the arm in abduction and external rotation especially when the humeral head is in intimate contact with the underside of the joint capsule. A graphic example is a fall in which we support the hand on the floor, his arm stretched separately.
3) wear
It happens rarely, but it may a repetitive and frequent dislocation triggered by weakening of the area, although it is considered a risk factor more than a cause.
Anterior dislocation is more common than later because the reinforcements at the back are bigger.
D) POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS
This injury usually accompanied by other damage associated complicating it and go on to enumerate:
1) Fracture of bone
It is relatively common fracture or tear in the following areas:
- Greater tubercle.
- Neck of the humerus.
- In the scapula.
2) Rupture of the rotator cuff, with the risk of the supraspinatus tendon.
3) Nerve
Along with the dislocation is often associated with axillary nerve compression. This complication occurs more frequently if the reduction is not practiced properly, can cause a significant loss of function by affecting mainly the shoulder deltoid muscle, instrumental in the movement of the shoulder.
To confirm this diagnosis is used electromyography.
4) Vascular lesions
It is unusual. There is, as in the previous case, the compression to move the humeral head. As in the previous case by a compression to move the humeral head.
This lesion has a recognizable symptoms: The member becomes pale, the area appears cool to the touch and, by taking the radial pulse at the wrist does not feel at all.
5) Recurrence of the lesion
When the capsule is damaged, subsequently regenerated tissues become more lax, contributing to a higher risk of injury to pre-existing injury.
The risk of recurrence or relapse is reduced over time to go consolidating regenerated tissues.
E) SYMPTOMS
The dislocated shoulder is usually the following symptoms:
1) Pain high instantaneous intensity as the injury occurs. The acute nature of this pain, prevents any movement of the joint and is mitigated only to hold the arm in a position where the shoulder area is not under load, ie the weight of the extremity seek joint efforts.
2) The appearance of the shoulder varies, losing its usual continuity, going to present a discontinuity in the area. You receive a lump above the surface of generally rounded shape which is commonly called “shoulder epaulet. If the dislocation is later, the changes are less clear and may even go unnoticed at first glance.
3) If there is associated nerve injury, a series of tingling, loss of strength and even a condition in skin sensitivity characteristic of this type of damage.
F) DIAGNOSIS
1) Physical examination: This is the most easy and reliable.
2) Radiography help confirm the diagnosis and rule out or corroborate related bone lesions. Posterior dislocations is not fully appreciated by this test.
3) CT / MRI: It is useful to assess posterior dislocation and, in cases with suspected muscle injury, tendon or nerve related.
G) TREATMENT:
1) From the moment that the dislocation occurs
a) Apply ice to numb the area and reduce pain.
b) Place the joint in a comfortable, and antalgic position, ie without pain.
c) Place the shoulder in place, by a physician or medical personnel with experience. The earlier the better replace it with the passage of time is a frequent appearance of muscle contractions that make it difficult and painful reduction.
d) post-reduction radiograph to ensure correct positioning of the shoulder.
e) immobilization in a sling for 3 to 4 weeks.
f) If the injury occurs frequently will require surgery.
2) Physiotherapy
Despite the necessary restraint in the area, the joint can perform certain movements with caution especially in rotations, allowing the following treatments:
a) Massage: We will help relax the area to avoid contractures.
b) Enhancement Muscle By using exercises or electrostimulation.
An estimated time of 40 – 45 days to return the activity.
3) Prevention
It is considered especially important after suffering the first dislocation in the joint.
The preventive work to prevent relapse is divided into:
a) Recovery of complete mobility.
b) proprioceptive job: A job properly proprioception help avoid situations where there is risk of dislocation.
c) Reinforcement of the muscular structures: Exercises such as push-ups with arms in different positions, work for the rotator with theraband, strengthening exercises in risk positions, are highly recommended.
4) Surgery
There are different techniques for different dislocations. The objective is to stabilize the joint all: tightening the capsule, changing the position of the edge of the glen, etc ….
It is recommended on some cases of anterior dislocation. In the case of posterior dislocations, being the much lower probability of recurrence, is generally not a common practice.
This part of treatment, especially surgery, has a myriad of varieties depending on the type of injury and personal circumstances so I invite people who have suffered this injury and has undergone surgery, to discuss their doubts and type of surgery used in each case.
In the next article will discuss the tendon and muscle injuries most common shoulder joint. A greeting.
