The single walled containers can be placed on an open flame or heating surface, but are not recommended as containers for boiling hot liquids as the Kanteen has limited insulating properties. The sanitary grade 304 stainless steel used in Klean Kanteen bottles also has a low nickel content, further reducing exposure to potentially irritating substances. Easy to clean, the Klean Kanteen water bottles can be put in the dishwasher, or washed by hand with a brush and mild soap. Klean Kanteens come in sizes to meet the needs of the entire family. The 12 and 18-ounce containers are designed specifically for kids. In bottles designed for small hands, the 12 and 18 ounce bottles are available with sippy cup lid adapters along with the other sports cap options, and weigh just 6 and 8 ounces respectively. Adult sized 27 and 40 ounce Kanteens weigh just 8 and 11 ounces respectively, and are available with a choice polypropylene or steel caps. The openings are large enough to fit ice cubes, and the slim bottle design fits in most cup and bottle holders. Klean Kanteen water bottles are available with a variety of sports caps made with non-leaching polypropylene #5 or stainless steel. The sport, flat, and loop caps are interchangeable and fit all 12-, 18-, 27-, and 40-ounce stainless steel bottles securely. The Poly Sports Cap has a push release valve allowing you to drink on the go. The Flat Caps, available in polypropylene or stainless steel twist on and off securely. The Loop Caps, available in polypropylene or stainless steel, twist on and off securely, and have a top loop for easy attachment. Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory. Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame. Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?
We do not recommend it and it will void the one-year warranty against manufacturer defects. Can I put my Kanteen on a stove?

a greener way to go January 6, 2009

I felt guilty using 'bought' water every week at exercise class, but it took me a while to find a stainless bottle with a sport top (for some reason the tops were always sold out). I love this one, and it holds just enough water to get me through a class. However...it's a very tight fit in many of the cages on the bikes at spinning class, and difficult to get in and out (so it now straddles the handlebars, on top of my towel).

Great product! Really like the poly sport cap. I find that I drink more water w/the sports cap vs. screw caps. The slim design makes it very portable & easy to slip into work bags/purses. Water tastes very clean. Definitely recommend over traditional water bottles!

These canteens are a good deal for the price. A friend tells me he paid $60 when these first came out, however they probably were not made in China back then. The machining is fairly good (not perfect) and they are made from food grade stainless steal although the question of the quality of the stainless steal has been raised. KK says a representative visits the factory 5-6 times a year and an independent lab in the US is regularly testing samples.
It seems people are finally starting to learn that SOME plastics that come in contact with food and drink are harmful. In their product literature, Klean Kanteen mentions other "lined metal containers" which almost certainly refers to SIGG bottles. If you are considering a SIGG bottle, I would advise against it: they are aluminum with a proprietary lining that more than likely contains BPA.

I recently bought four of these for my family for Christmas, so we could stop using the plastic bottles. After drinking from the 40oz. steel loop cap bottle I had an allergic reaction where the bottle comes into contact with my mouth. I researched their website to realize there is Nickel in the steel, of which I am allergic. I just wanted to make others aware of the potential allergy. I only have had an issue with jewelry before and didn't think twice about drinking from a metal bottle. The rest of my family has had no reaction and they love their bottles!

I recently purchased the Klean Kanteen Stainless with Poly Loop Cap and also the Enviro with the sports cap. The poly loop cap is easier for a child to use, whereas the sports cap is tight and difficult to open. I like Klean Kanteen better than Enviro because the steel is thicker. I've also tried the Sigg bottles, but for the price Klean Kanteen is the clear winner for me. Hope this helps you. Happy New Year!
